Marlins and Pirates making millions past few seasons.
« on: August 25, 2010, 05:15:10 PM »
What does everyone think of the info that came out this week about the Pirates and Marlins pocketing millions of dollars in recent seasons? The Pirates made nearly $29.4 million in 2007 and 2008. The Marlins made $49M in profits in 2008-09. Now I will say that Pirates have shown they are willing to spend more money on signing draft picks and amateur free agents recently but really isn't point of revenue sharing for them to field a more competitive team?

As for the Marlins well I have trusted a thing David Samson or Jeff Loria had done since their days in Montreal. Heck the MLBPA had to basically strong arm them into signing Josh Johnson to a contract extension. Also from what I have read Miami residents are not very happy with this news given the Marlins are having a new tax payer funded stadium built which during its negotiations they cried poor constantly.

this should be the owner's equivalent of a player betting on games. those owners have absolutely no interest in winning. if they are really that cash strapped why didn't they sell when they had the chance? i'm sure Mark Cuban made a competitive offer for the Pirates, but they said no. they rather have their 50k payroll and collect revenue sharing.

I'm not sure why this would be a surprise.  Of course the teams with low payrolls are going to make more money.  They have less expenses.

its not the fact that they make money, its that they only care about making money and make no effort to win.

Money is more important then winning to most.  If Rogers had a choice between winning the world series at a loss and finishing in last place and making money they'd choose last.

Not a surprise that owners are greedy but this type of thing can lead to a huge fight at the next CBA. If I am the owner of the Red Sox, Yankees and Dodgers why do I want to pay into revenue sharing just so the other owners can pocket it and still cry poor about not being able to re-sign players.

then why don't they? why don't they go with a 20k payroll and just collect the revenue sharing checks?

if someone is only interested in making money as a team owner, then they should choose something else to invest in. there are so many other things that are a better money maker than professional sports teams.
