I hope one day they'll band giving kids so much money for signing on, even 350,000 i find crazy for a HS kid, they should only get that money if they earn a spot on the Major Lerague roster.

it's meant as incentive to not go to college, too...which is kinda funny.

but whatever, i definitely wouldn't turn it down.

They'd have a hard time convincing a lot of high school kids to skip out on a free education college if they don't give them some sort of financial security.

Most of these kids that sign on will get free education if they don't pan out, it's a pretty common stipulation now.

33rd rounder Melvin Garcia signed, not sure for how much but definitely above slot...which for a 33rd rounder doesn't mean much.

that's a joke. those kids don't learn anything at school, except how to build up a high alcohol tolerance. some leave early

Business is business.  If a kid has talent and a Major League team wants to pay him handsomely to secure his services then go for it.  These "kids" are 18.  They don't have to go to College regardless if they're athletes or not.  I hope AA keeps throwing the coin around and inks some more of these higher end kids like Thon, Bryant, Marlowe, and Vander Tuig.

Regardless, a degree is a degree. (Well, unless they take some dumb major, like volunteering or recreation)

this is surprising considering his father's comments..but Thon's getting 1st round money for a 5th rounder?  well done AA

He's a 1st round talent, he dropped because of signability.

I'm genuinely shocked that AA got him signed.  His dad said some pretty nasty things and because the Jays were the team that drafted him, a lot of it was directed at him.   It's a player with huge potential, and if AA can sign a few more of these, it could take a bit of the sting out of the potential non-signing of Deck McGuire.

Chances are we won't hear anything until the deadline. He'll likely sign around 1.9M.

On another note, 11th round HSer Shane Opitz appears to have signed, unknown bonus atm.
