Jays Prospects: Various Notes and Commentary...
« on: June 07, 2009, 07:44:27 PM »
Rather than starting a new thread for every prospect whenever something comes up worth noting, just post the info here...

I'll start...

Brad Mills finally gets his 1st win of the season in Las Vegas (he's pitched a lot better than his record shows).  He went 7 shutout innings, giving up 4 hits, 0 walks, and struck out 11.

Reading the minor league reports everyday it seems like the most exciting and fun to look out for prospects are either in Dunedin or Lansing this year.

Mills finally gets a win eh? About time because he has a very espectable ERA.

Stats can be misleading, but yeah, that makes a lot of sense considering 2010-2011 is when the draft picks from 1-2 years ago will be hitting the Majors.

Although I would say that there are plenty of guys to watch out on the Las Vegas roster with David Purcey, Brad Mills, Scott Campbell, and Travis Snider on the roster.  That and Accardo working his way back to the Majors.

I'm also keeping an eye on Wade Miller who at least for a 3-year period in Houston pitched like a #2/#3 pitcher who can win you 15+ games.  He has battled injuries since 2004.  In 6 starts he is 1-2 with a 3.77ERA.  He has been dominant against left handed pitching with a sparkling 1.33 ERA but has an inflated ERA over 6 against righties.  I'm actually not concerned about it though because he has a 1.90 ground ball to fly ball ratio against righties.  I think the defense is pretty terrible on the Las Vegas squad though.

Kyle Phillips/Campbell/Howard have 17 errors at 3B.  Arencibia had 9 errors before leaving AAA behind the plate.  Howie Clark/Joe Inglett have 10 errors at 2B.  Sanchez has 6 errors at SS.  42 errors from the infield seems pretty high and there really isn't a defensive specialist among them so we can't really count on those errors being plays made on "the average player wouldn't even get to the ball" type events.

Yeah, definately agree about Wade Miller...when it was reported we signed him i thought it was a win/win situation..hopefully he can cut that ERA down against righties and work he way into the Jays rotation as the 5th man maybe.

The AAA guys, Purcey, Snider, Accardo and Mills are all pretty hot talent but i know what to expect and how they go about the game so them kindda players apart from Snider aren't what i look for straight away when i check the reports. Have been wondering about Sanchez though and whether or not he could play in the Majors as a backup...i love Mac but he's like a pitcher when he comes for AB's now.

I've noticed Buck Coats is having a tremedous season in Vegas thus far, lots of SB's and a good average for a leadoff man.

Tim Collins, Danny Farquhar, Marc Rep, Tyler Pastornicky, Brian Van Kirk, and Justin Jackson are all players i like to keep my eye on.

Balbino Fuenmayor has really been swining the stick quite well after a brutal start to the season.  His average was hovering around .100-.140 for quite a while...he's up to .268 now.  Ok...he's only walked twice and struck out over 40 times, but that will come with time.  He won't be 20 until November.

I desperately wanted Chip Cannon to make it too, purely based on his name!

My sentiments exactly, his first name isn't really "Chip" though, we'll let that slide.

Not setting the world alight in Dunedin im afraid, Jackson is showing signs of life lately though.

I agree about Buck Coats, great average, gets allot of extra base hits, steals his fare share of bases and would have been a much better call up then Inglett.

Other News: Marc "Zep" has been called up to AAA, very good prospect.

Rzepczynski had his first start in AAA Las Vegas tonight.

He went 5.2 innings, gave up 2 hits, 0 runs, walked 3 and struck out 9.

Threw 94 pitches...57 for strikes.

Very nice start to his AAA career.

A 1.51 WHIP from a 24 year old in AA, to me, is not indicative of a very good prospect

But good first start in AAA so we'll see what happens

Quote
Marc Rzepczynski: A senior draft pick out of UC Riverside in 2007, this southpaw has improved with each minor league step he’s taken. Not only does Rzepczynski strike out his fair share of batters (almost 10.0 K/9 in his three-year career), the hurler also gets a mind-boggling number of groundball outs (career 64.6 GB%). His fastball is more like a bowling ball that can touch 92 mph and he also has a good slider and sinking (of course) changeup. With all the pitching injuries in Toronto, Rzepczynski could be up before the end of the season. His ultimate ceiling is probably that of a No. 3 starter.

Which is a huge thing.  The Jays have a great infield defense.  You can't say that about some of their prospects however as there is a lot of development that needs to be done there.  I'm always skeptical of pitching stats for that reason.  You can't compare the Jays infield to a minor league team and expect similar results from a GB pitcher.
