Jays to add another farm team
« on: August 08, 2010, 11:42:47 AM »
According to Jordan Bastian

"Anthopoulos said today Jays are exploring possibly adding another low Class A affiliate in the future. Would give club 7 Minor League teams."

Is there a standard number of minor league teams that an organization usually has?  Just wondering how many teams have more than 6...I'm guessing the Yankees would have at least 7.

Bottom line...I don't see this a bad thing.  I'm thinking it means that AA plans on adding a lot more young talent (signing more draft selections and International FA's) over the next few years.

I asked Bastian whether he thought they'd keep their GCL team if they added another A team. No response yet.

And yes AA feels it will help with International talent and HS players

"AA said another Class A team would help with organization's emphasis on adding Latin American talent & drafting high schoolers. "

does low A refer to short season A?

Short Season is technically A-.  So he could essentially be thinking of rookie ball or short season.

I want a new AAA team back in the Independent League. It makes little sense for a Northeastern team to have a minor league team in the west and I hate that uber hitter friendliness fudging the stats.

if he's adding another farm team in A ball, why not add a farm team in canada in Montreal or somewhere like that???  would be nice to have a AAA close to home....especially in canada.

It isn't easy to put a team anywhere you want.  The minor league teams are typically owned by outside owners and there is a player development contract signed between the minor league club and the major league organization.  In order for a team to be moved to Canada, there would first have to be a person that would be able to purchase an existing minor league team and be able to move them to a place that either had a ball park or would be willing to build one.  Then they would have to get the league that they would be looking to join to sign off on the move.  It is pretty intensive to actually move a team and it is not an easy process.  The only way the Jays could persoanlly move a team to Canada would be for them to buy one.

Darryl,

If JB gets back with you I am actually curious as to what AA mean by that statment.  The PDC between Lansing and Toronto is up at the end of this season and there has been no discussion that I have heard that they are renewing the agreement.  The souvenoir shop no longer carries any merchandise that promotes the Toronoto / Lansing affiliation either.  I wonder if AA may be looking at a new low A full season affiliation.  My feeling is that he may be looking at possibly moving the low A team to the SAL.

It's too bad, I really like the Lugnuts.

I also just realized how misleading this topic title is.

I don't think he meant that the team will replace Lansing. I think it will mean we will have 2 low-A clubs as apposed to just the one we have now.

The problem is that you can't have two low A full season affiliations.  There are 30 low A teams and 30 MLB teams.  I believe that there is a rule preventing have two full season affiliations at a level as well.  He could have been talking about two short season affiliations like the Jays had with Pulaski and Auburn a few years ago.  That could be a possibility.

It says Jays to add another farm team. Nowhere have the Jays said they WILL add another farm team, just that they are exploring their options.  It's a misrepresentation of facts that's all.

I think part of the puzzle just became clearer as it sounds like Auburn and the Jays are likely cutting ties.

Hmm could be a few new farm teams next year cause I don't believe they have renewed with Las Vegas yet.

I really hope they can find somewhere other than Las Vegas. But, they may be better off just renewing with Las Vegas one year at a time until something like Buffalo, Syracuse or Rochester or something close like that opens up.

More on the Jays likely dropping Auburn as an affiliate:

Although not yet "official" all signs point to the Jays and Doubledays parting ways after 10 years.

Yeah, there are a few farm teams that are up for reaffiliation this year.  In addition to Auburn, the PDC is up for Lansing and Vegas as well.  It appears to me that the PDC people are waiting for the minor league seasons to end before they do anything and that may point to either the Jays or the minor league ownership groups want a change of scenery.

Rochester and Syracuse were both up for reaffillliation this year as well.  I know Rochester just recently renewed with Minnesota and I am not sure Syracuse is viable as it sounds like the break up wasn't the best.  I agree, there could be a few new locations next year as far as Blue Jay affiliations go.
